Fear of God - What it REALLY means.

From CrossCulture's "Scripture in Today's Language"

Most modern gospel preachers mis-define the FEAR of God as simply reverence, awe or respect for God.
In attempting to positively flavor the gospel, they actually expose their blatant violation of simple hermeneutics, the derivation of meaning based on the original tongue and context.

Hebrew words:
yare' - verb form
yi'rah - noun or adjective form
PHOBIA - Greek translation in the LXX, sounds familiar???

Isaiah 8:13 - means "dread"
Isaiah 19:16 - to the point that we "tremble"
Jeremiah 5:22 - involves "trembling"
Psalm 55:5 - all 3 words to yi'rah

Definition:
Dread that God is displeased with you or "fear and trembling" (Phil 2:12b) when you displease God, or when your life displeases God.
Kingdom children should dread when they know they violate God and his standards.
The God who blesses is also the SAME God who CURSES even his own chosen people! (Deuteronomy 27 to 29)

Duty of Man: Eccl 12:13 - Talk about the "chief end of man" according to Solomon

It is a good thing: Psalm 86:11
