Bearing Fruit is the ONLY THING Christians are good for!
The point of the Christ's analogy of the Vine and the branches is that the branches are maintained only to bear fruit. If it does not bear fruit, it is cut off from the vine (v.15:6). So if Christ is the Vine and we are the branches, we cannot be good for nothing. We should bear fruit or we are "thrown away and burned"
We don't force ourselves to bear fruit. All the branch needs to do is abide in the vine. Bearing from is a NATURAL result of healthy abiding in the vine.
Eternal life according to Robert Shank, and rightly so, is a SHARED life. You only have it as long as you abide in Christ and his words abide in us. Christ Himself defined eternal life in John 17:3: "And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent". As you see it has nothing much to do with longevity. That is why it is called the abundant life in John 10:10.
